I don’t listen to rap music very often but when I do I listen to Drake. Drake is the real deal. He’s a great rapper. He was also a great actor. Remember Degrassi, Jimmy Brooks was a bad ass, and if Spinner and Jay had never tarred and feather that dumb ass Rick, Jimmy would still be walking. I find it interesting that he acted first and then became a rapper. It’s almost always the other way around. Tupac, Snoop, DMX, TI, they all had to become established rappers before they were given acting jobs.
Ice Cube had probably the strangest transition. He went from being in NWA to being the star of “Are we there yet.” That’s the way to do it. You gotta be hardcore before you go soft. Drake did it backwards. I don’t know how but he did. I’m not even sure how he even has any street cred. What if Jay-z used to be Elvin from the Cosby Show? He probably would’ve been perceived a little differently.
Who knows maybe Drake is starting a new trend. How long until Gordon from Sesame street comes out with a mixtape?
